Sep 14, 2017  If you are a lowly Windows user like myself, and work with iOS, you are probably frustrated with how terrible Apple's support is for Windows users. So I'm going to show you a quick and easy to way to download, install and use the San Francisco typeface on Windows. Jan 25, 2017 If you are interested in downloading and trying out the San Francisco font on your Mac, then you can download it from Apple’s developer website. Do note that even though you can download San Francisco font for free, it does come with strict terms and conditions limiting where you can use the font without breaking the agreement.

The font is adapted from San Francisco – Apple’s new typeface for the Apple Watch. This project was inspired by jenskutilek’s Fira System Font Replacement. The fonts were generated using dtinth's Yosemite System Font Patcher.

Easy Install

Run this command from Terminal.app:

Manual Install:

1. Download the zipped font files.
2. Copy the 5 font files to /Library/Fonts on your Mac. (protip: press cmd+shift+g while in Finder to type the path directly.)Important note: this is the /Library/Fonts folder, not ~/Library/Fonts.
3. Run sudo chown root:wheel /Library/Fonts/System San Francisco* to set the proper ownership of the font files.
4. Run sudo atsutil databases -remove to clear the OS X Font Cache
5. Repair Disk Permissions diskutil repairPermissions / (for good measure)
6. Restart your computer so the changes can take effect.

How to Uninstall:

1. Navigate to /Library/Fonts on your Mac and delete the files starting with System San Francisco.
2. Log out and log back in to apply the changes.

How does it Work?

These San Francisco fonts have a special name table with names identical to those of the system fonts. Because the font folder /Library/Fonts takes precedence over the fonts which are in /System/Library/Fonts, these specially crafted fonts are used for the user interface instead of the real system fonts. The original system fonts are not deleted or modified in any way.

Important Notes:

1. I assume no copyright over these fonts.
2. I assume no liability for improper installation or improper use.
3. You must be a registered Apple Developer to use these fonts. Do not download if you don't have a paid Apple Developer Program account.
4. These fonts will only work as Helvetica Neue system replacement fonts. If you attempt to use them differently, they will not work!
5. While San Francisco “Text” is recommended by Apple for smaller sizes (mainly user interfaces), the “Display” face has much better letterspacing and kerning. If you prefer the Text face, install the files in the “Text Face (alternate)” folder.

Security

If you're concerned about the authenticity of the install script, you can clone this repo and verify the installer with my GPG signature. You should find a file named install.sig which you can use to:

• Verify that install hasn't been tampered with, and
• Get proof that it really was authored by Wells Riley.

SF Symbols provides a set of over 1,500 consistent, highly configurable symbols you can use in your app. Apple designed SF Symbols to integrate seamlessly with the San Francisco system font, so the symbols automatically ensure optical vertical alignment with text for all weights and sizes. You can use SF Symbols in apps running in iOS 13 and later, watchOS 6 and later, and tvOS 13 and later.

SF Symbols come in nine weights — from ultralight to black — each of which corresponds to a weight of the San Francisco system font. This correspondence lets you achieve precise weight matching between symbols and adjacent text, while supporting flexibility for different sizes and contexts.

Each symbol is also available in three scales: small, medium, and large. The scales are defined relative to the cap height of the San Francisco system font. By specifying a scale, you can adjust a symbol's emphasis compared to adjacent text, without disrupting the weight matching with text that uses the same point size.

You can use SF symbols to represent tasks and types of content in a variety of specific places, such as navigation bars, toolbars, tab bars, context menus, and Home Screen Quick Actions. Throughout the rest of your app, you can use a symbol everywhere you can use an image.

Creating Custom Symbols

If you need a symbol that isn't provided by SF Symbols, you can create your own. The SF Symbols app lets you export a symbol as a template in a reusable, vector-based file format. To create a custom symbol, export an SF symbol that's similar to the design you want and modify the template using a vector-editing tool like Sketch or Illustrator. Use the result in your app as you would use the original template file. See Symbols for Use As-Is for a list of symbols that can't be customized. Be guided by the template. Create a custom symbol that's consistent with the system-provided ones in terms of level of detail, optical weight, alignment, position, and perspective. Strive to design a symbol that is:

• Simple
• Recognizable
• Not offensive
• Directly related to the action or content it represents

To support a wide range of text settings, create custom symbols in as many weights and scales as your app requires. To enable the bold text setting and support Dynamic Type, create symbols in regular, medium, semibold, and bold at all scales. If your app uses additional font weights and scales, create symbols in these weights and scales, too.

Don’t use replicas of Apple products. Apple products are copyrighted and can’t be reproduced in your custom symbols.

Provide alternative text labels for custom symbols. Alternative text labels aren’t visible, but they let VoiceOver audibly describe what's onscreen, making navigation easier for people with visual impairments.
